The Historical Society would like to share a letter we received from Melissa Coles, a graduate of LHS and recipient of the first Jerry Forrester Scholarship back in 2007.
Dear Historical Society of Walton County,
Greetings! I write with a happy update: I graduated with my PhD in History from the University of Notre Dame this weekend!
Thank you for your support throughout my career, beginning with the scholarship that helped me with my undergraduate degree. Ya'll helped me become the historian I am today.
Thank you for everything. Oh, and for jobs, I am working for the National Council on Public History and for the National Park Service to collect oral histories. And I have a job at Notre Dame that begins this fall!
I am very happy that I can share this news with you. I hope everyone in the Society is well, and thank you again.
With Gratitude,
Melissa
We would love to hear from other scholarship recipients over the past 17 years. We are thankful for the opportunity to help support these students and could not do so without the generosity of our community.
Congratulations on your PhD Melissa! We are so proud of you.
Dianne Cown, one of the Society's valued Trustees, recently visited several local schools to educate students on the contributions of Moina Michael, "The Poppy Lady." One of Walton's most famous residents, Ms. Michael raised money for injured WWI veterans by selling silk poppies, which came to be a symbol of remembrance for war veterans.
We are very grateful to Dianne for allowing our students to meet Ms. Moina and hear her inspiring story.
A Memorial Day Celebration was held on May 29th at 11:00 am at the Veteran's Park in Monroe.
Trustee Dianne Cown appeared as "The Poppy Lady," Walton County's own Moina Michael, reminding attendees to remember our fallen soldiers with a silk poppy.
Steve Brown, Historian and Trustee for the Society, was the Master of Ceremonies and led the Pledge Of Allegiance. Archbishop Foley Beach gave the invocation, Joe Buffalo sang the National Anthem, and David Thompson, Chairman of the Walton County Board of Commissioners, gave the welcome.
Colonel Joe Gregg delivered a powerful and inspiring speech imploring us to remember and celebrate our fallen soldiers, but to also to enjoy the freedoms they died for.
A wreath was presented by VFW Post 4421 and a moment of silence was observed. Don Smith played Taps to honor those who gave their lives to our country.
It was a beautiful ceremony honoring our veterans and we are very grateful to Gail Smith for all her hard work in organizing this event.
